Unique identifiers are a fingerprint or signature of an item that is difficult to counterfeit or transfer from one item to another without detection.  During the nuclear weapon dismantlement process, unique identifiers provide a way to identify the specific item, protecting its chain of custody and preventing undetected replacement.
